Closed on Sundays: Chick-Fil-A and the Super Bowl

Chick-Fil-A Corporate:

Your company is considered to be one of the fastest growing companies in the food and beverage industry. This fact is due in part to a fairly unprecedented business model. It is not a secret that a Chick-Fil-A is run as a Christian based organization and, therefore, is held to a certain standard in terms of company policies. For example, employees are urged to say “my pleasure” instead of “you’re welcome” and each franchise closes on Sundays to recognize the Lord’s day of rest. This Sunday policy is true for all locations, including the Chick-Fil-A franchise that has opened in the Mercedes-Benz stadium. This announcement came as a shock to NLF fans everywhere which has pushed Chick-Fil-A center stage on many social networking platforms, especially as Super Bowl 2019 approaches.

To monitor the conversion surrounding the Sunday closure of the Chick-fil-a franchise within the Falcons stadium, I studied the hashtags #Chickfila and #SuperBowl on Twitter. I examined these hashtags over a three day period between January 21 to January 23, 2019. From here, I was able to form an accurate representation of the reaction of Twitter users to the news of the Super Bowl Sunday Chick-Fil-A closure. Moreover, I was able to give a methodological examination of social media trends surrounding the subject.

Over the three day period of examination, I found that only 15 tweets used the combine hashtags. However, these tweets reached almost 49,000 accounts. Some of these tweets were merely reporting the announcement that the Chick-Fil-A location within the Mercedes-Benz Stadium would be close on Super Bowl Sunday. However, others seemed to be showing their support for the company’s decision to remain true to their  values despite the profits the company could be making during the Super Bowl.

With this support in mind, there are some things that your company could be doing to harness this social media attention. For example, I noted that only 15 tweets mentioning these keywords occurred in a three day period. However, if Chick-Fil-A decided to enlist the use of social media platforms, such as twitter, in combination with these and other similar keywords, your company would be able to increase the number of mentions it receives. This could pave the way for trending stories surrounding your decision.
